Although bowing isn’t used as an everyday form of etiquette in China (as it is in Japan or Korea), it remains an important spiritual gesture. Physically, lowering the body works as a sign of humility. On a symbolic or spiritual level, however, bowing also reinforces the social hierarchy—it’s a bodily reproduction of social order. This is an internalized form of discipline: people don’t bow because they’re explicitly told to, but because they know they’re supposed to. And that is exactly how power operates in its most subtle form.
